Some Cold Hard Facts
- There are 10,000 human babies born in the US every day compared to the approximate 70,000 kittens and puppies born in the same 24 hour period.
- According to the Humane Society of the United States there are between 8 and 10 million dogs and cats entering sheltersand rescues each year.
- 50% of them will be put to death for the lack of a loving home.
- 25% of all dogs in shelters and rescues are purebred.
- There are seven puppies and kittens born each day for every person living in the United States. Of those only 1 in 5 will spend thier lifetime in their original homes. The others will be abandoned on the street or surrendered to shelters.
- Puppy Mills churn out thousands of puppies each year that are shipped accross country to pet stores, sold in newspaper classified ads and on the internet. The breeding stock for these operations live their entire life in a cage with no human companionship.
Don't like what you've just read? The truth isn't pretty, but nevertheless these are the facts and only you can help change them. If you own a dog or cat have it spayed or neutered. Be responsible, don't take on a kitten or puppy if you can't provide it with a "forever" home.
If you are considering adoption, please look at a local shelter or rescue. So many wonderful dogs, cats, kittens and puppies are waiting for loving homes.
Support your local no kill shelter or rescue with a bag of food, a cash donation or by purchasing one of the many fine products they offer in their fundraising projects.
Consider fostering a dog or cat. Many animals are waiting and you'll be rewarded with the love and companionship of a needy animal.
