Every dog who is taken boating should be fitted for and wear a Personal Flotation Device for their safety.
Don't assume your dog can swim, many cannot and others are not good swimmers. Allow your dog or puppy to experience the water for the first time under strict supervision. NEVER throw your dog or puppy into the water! Be sure to measure carefully before you purchase your PFD and allow your dog to become accustom to wearing the device before taking them onto the water.

Take frequent breaks in hot weather and be sure to supply plenty of fresh drinking water. Check your dog for ticks frequently and know how to remove a tick successfully if you should find one on your pet. Be aware that many ticks can cause serious disease in both dogs and humans so check with your vet to ensure your dog has the proper vaccinations before heading into the woods.
